A genre-defying album by Jacobs School of Music clarinet professor Cecilia Kang, The Han (한/恨) and Heung (흥/興) Odyssey was recently released on Albany Records. Blending Western classical music with gugak (traditional Korean music), minimalism, improvisation, contemporary styles, and electronics, the album features ten works—seven newly commissioned—by composers with roots in South Korea, China, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka, Jamaica, North America, and Eastern Europe. Centered on the Korean concepts of han (grief) and heung (joy), it explores themes of exile, immigration, and healing through a rich cross-cultural soundscape. Radio broadcasts include CBC (Canada), MBC (South Korea), and NPR.
